Having one myself and having taught many in the past and hopefully many in my future, I have to wonder, what makes them tick. Is it different for each teenager? How do we motivate our teenagers to want to succeed. Is detention and home punishments really helping, or does it make things worse.
Just a thought. Love to hear yours.

With one semester left towards my masters in computer technology education, I am starting to wonder if I made the right choice. Well, as I research technology in school districts, I start to wonder if they make it a priority? Is technology the first thing to go when funds drop or things need to be shakin up? It appears it just might be that way. I am conversing with a friend in Virginia who just had 3 computer technology teachers layed off due to budget cuts. As for the state I live in, New Hampshire, It appears there dedication to technology is deep. While I realize that content area's are extremely important, in this day and age, is technology not equally important? When is computer technology going to become and integral part of our school systems and curriculum? How much longer do we have to wait for school districts to realize that technology is our children's future, and they are doing them a great injustice by not integrating it into their curriculum in a much larger way?
I wonder... |

Per Jeff's last post to me and I quote: "This is great! Be thinking of a collaborative project you can do with your classmates in this class. Maybe you want to use your wiki as a way to bring information together that all of you can use". So let's do it ladies. I'm on vacation in Disney from 4/27-5/2 so I'm trying to stay ahead of the game. Ok, some things that have interested me in our journey together so far. Wiki's, I also find I am intrigued with digital identities, see url's

Kim I also think your themes I have noticed in your blogs such as "how we break the barriers at school to allow web 2.0 to come right in" is a great one too, unless you think we should do this on an application more than a topic. Let's start collaborating :))

| shegstrom | Universal/Cultural DifferencesJudgments of Facial Expression | 4 | Apr 2 2008, 9:48 PM EDT by Anonymous | ||||

It appears that agreement is very high across cultures regarding which emotion is most intensely expressed by facial features however cultural differences were found in the judgments of the absolute level of emotional intensity. The emotions range from happiness, fear, anger or disgust, sadness and …. However not all scientists agree with this assessment despite overwhelming evidence. The point of this article/research was to present both points of views and the flaws in the findings of each.
One of the most interesting studies was done in New Ginnea, where Universality of expression was found despite the fact that the culture is visually isolated. Though it showed some validity there are flaws with this approach where only one culture is tested. 1. There is only this one study. 2. Not all six emotions portrayed were recognized. 3. Facial expressions were posed and not spontaneous. Another interesting study was done between Japanese and American cultures when shown stress inducing films and neutral films. The following findings were found: 1. When unaware of observation, both had identical facial expressions. 2. When the Japanese knew they were being observed, they were able to look happy during sad events. This is evidence of the ability to mask emotions. 3. This is a single study that has not been repeated and only represents two cultures. 4. The full range of emotions (which are?) were not tested. The most valid study of lack of cultural differences in facial expressions was done where observers were shown three different types of attributes to elicit emotion. A.) posed emotion B.) Spontaneous expression and C) photographs in which models followed instructions about which muscles to contract (muscular configurations that universal signal emotions). This was done with all six emotions with three pictures for each emotion. Various attributes were taken into account such as age, sex and amount of expressions. Ended at 153

In this day and age how can we not teach with the theory of connectivism. We cannot take in all the information we are expected to process and as technology progresses, this information is going to come at us faster and faster. Our old theories of teaching just do not work in today's society. Check out http://www.elearnspace.org/Articles/connectivism.htm. We need to teach our students how to form networks of people, wiki's, blogs etc, so that they have a community to bounce ideas off of and so that they can find an expert easily. When we set up nodes in our network, we no longer feel the need to know everything. We know where to go to get the information we need.
