Motivating teenagers
Jun 6 2008, 8:09 AM EDT
Having one myself and having taught many in the past and hopefully many in my future, I have to wonder, what makes them tick. Is it different for each teenager? How do we motivate our teenagers to want to succeed. Is detention and home punishments really helping, or does it make things worse.Just a thought. Love to hear yours. Do you find this valuable? |

I have been teaching teenagers, in a public High School, for the last ten years. Most teenagers have a mind set prioritized by what is important to them. School and classes don't always rate high on their scale. I find, from personal experience, that the best way to get teen students interested is to try and assimilate the lessons to their lifestyle. Another HUGE help is your personality. I talk to my students, not at them. They know the difference and can tell if your genuine. Remember what it used to be like when you were that age? Now I'm not telling you to be their buddy, just be real and treat them with respect and they will return it. It sounds awful but if a teen does not like a teacher, no matter what subject, they will not try to learn. You don't want a form of rebellion set to hinder the learning experience. Some aspects can relate to a majority of teen mind sets but always remember each teen is an individual.

I agree, being real is what it is all about, I have had many students say they enjoyed my class because I was real and shared my life, asked them about theirs. The problem is the teachers who are so stale that a teenager loses all motivation to do any work for that class. I found at the end of the year, my son's grades in HS dropped significantly. We tried taking away privaledges, but it didnt help. He finally said to me that he was so bored in the two subjects or he disliked the teachers so much that he just didn't want to do the work. How to we motivate our own children so that when they come across stale or boring teachers that they still get the work done? Thanks for the reply. As a first year teacher, yes I finally got a job in Nashua, I will take all the info I can get. Do you find this valuable? |
